Review: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #1)

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for the magic…

When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate’s guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t have it any other way…

What I Liked:
Kate was pretty kick-ass and likeable despite being prickly as hell.
The world was pretty cool with an interesting take on magic, shapeshifters and vamps.

What I Didn't Like:
Long-winded rambling descriptions of everything.
The lack of any kind of romantic feels was also annoying. I can put up with a lot of unnecessary blather if I have some stolen moments to look forward to but there wasn't any. Yes, yes, I know that romance isn't a requirement of urban fantasy but there's usually something to intrigue a romance junkie and there wasn't! Kate's 'romantic interest' - and I use the term lightly - was a damp squib, dead before it got off the ground through lack of chemistry. The only other viable 'ship' was Kate and Curran - the Beast Lord - but at this point they're more likely to kill each other than give a reader warm fuzzies.

Other Thoughts:
Despite the long-winded and overly descriptive writing style, I enjoyed the book and I'll definitely continue reading the series. There are so many routes the writer can take Kate's story that I'm at a loss as to what's to come next but quite eager to find out.

“You know anything about investigative work?"
"Sure. Annoy the people involved until the guilt party tries to make you go away.”

💬

“What kind of a woman greets the Beast Lord with 'here, kitty, kitty'?”

💬

“The knocking persisted. It wasn't Derek. His knock would be careful, almost apologetic. This bastard knocked like he was doing me a favor.”

  1. I love this series - and especially Curran - but I agree with you on some of the long winded descriptors. I do think each book gets better though - as does the romance.

  2. Hang in there! This was my least favorite of the series. I gave it a 3 star as well. But man the series takes off and turns amazing I think. And the romance element while not full blown like a regular romance book gets a lot better :)
