This Week's Question:
Have you ever thought of writing a respectful, but angry letter to an author to ask them WHY they killed off one of your favorite characters in a novel?
My Answer:
Erm, no. I can't say that I have.
I can honestly say that I haven't even thought about doing it either.
In fact, as I write this, I'm struggling to recall a character whose death sent me into a flying rage which is the state I'd get ranty -respectful or otherwise - and I can't think of one.
I've been saddened by the death of many a favourite character before, a little angry sure, but never enraged.
I think you'd have to be truly incensed to send a howler to an author over what they chose to do with a character of their own creation.
My propensity for getting emotionally involved with fictional characters is a running joke amongst my family and friends but I obviously just don't care enough about their deaths.
However, you switch this around and make it about romantic interests doing shitty things or bad things happening to my favourite couples and I'd be tempted, lol.
That's one of the reasons I read romance... You're almost certainly guaranteed a happy ever after!
I do love the HEA with the romance. It's always nice to know characters I love will survive to the end. I don't usually get enraged either even if I'm not happy with the death.
ReplyDeleteI haven't but I can't say I wasn't tempted even once, hehe. But I did write one time though, it was after reading her story with a cliff hanger ending which I thought I had an uncompleted copy lol.

I always feel sad when an author kills off a loved character. I'm OK with that...unless this character had a HEA in another book. Then I get pretty pissy. Would I write the author? No, I don't think so but I'd probably never read their books again.

ReplyDeleteI think if I got this mad over the death of a character; I don't think I would be in the mood to write a letter- toss the book across the room, sure. ;) I read a romance where the heroine and then the hero both died and it gutted me, but it worked for that book with me, oddly enough.

Great answer! Mine's definitely similar - I can't actually think of a character that I was that angry over if they happened to die. I've been upset many times, but never to the point of even considering writing to the author to demand an explanation. It's their own story and they're their characters after all, even if we adore them.

I've never even thought of doing this either. Even if I'm heartbroken by a character's death, I just accept that the author did it for a reason and I don't get angry about it.
