Oh, Hiccup... This character and his beautiful nightfury, Toothless, stole my heart long ago.
I probably shouldn't admit this as a serious bookworm but I've never read the How To Train Your Dragon book series. I've only ever watched the movies and associated TV shows.
The How To Train Your Dragon movies (and TV shows!) are wonderful tales of love, loyalty, bravery, inclusion and friendship.
They have amazing characters who will have you laughing out loud one minute and shedding a tear the next. Packed full of action, they keep you on the edge of your seat and everything always works out in the end.
They're amazing to share with your children.
In the first movie, you had a brave Viking teen who doesn't fit in with his people and struggled with his father's expectations. His predicament was made worse when he befriended dragons rather than kill them but he stood by his belief and saved his people from folly, losing a leg in the process.
In the second film, Hiccup has found his place and is learning to be a leader of his people. Dragons End has peace with dragons but there are those who want to use dragons for their evil ends and will stop at nothing to attain their goals. Tragedy strikes but Hiccup and Toothless hold it together and the movie ends with them stronger for all that they've been through.
In The Hidden World, we see Hiccup as chief of his people.
He has created a utopia where dragons and his people live together in harmony.
However, there are still those in the world that want to destroy the dragons and all that Hiccup has built. This is the story where Toothless and Hiccup truly grow up.
Toothless finds a mate and Hiccup has to make painful choices to protect both his people and his beloved dragons.
It's a movie in which we have to say goodbye to this dynamic duo and I'm not going to lie, I bawled like a freaking baby in the cinema for it was a heartbreakingly perfect end to a wonderful franchise.
I will miss these characters fiercely and I cannot recommend them to people highly enough.
