Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year, folks!
I hope you've had a wonderful festive period regardless of whether you celebrate or not.

I've been pondering what I want 2023 to bring and all the thoughts are still a jumbled mess but one thing I do know I want to achieve this year is to get back into the swing of blogging and work out how to navigate the new bookish "influencer" landscape... I miss when things were simple and your blog was all you needed but nowadays it feels like Instagram (particularly Reels) and TikTok are where you need to be and... I hate it. Mostly because I don't understand it, don't have time (or refuse to make time) for it and really don't like being on-camera... I'm not comfortable with how I look, how I sound and with "putting myself out there" but I think I need to overcome those hang-ups and the primary driver isn't for bookish purposes so... Watch this space, I guess!

Today, we're having a meal with my FIL, my mum etc to celebrate the New Year and on Tuesday we have an Alcatraz-themed escape room to go to before I go back to work on Wednesday.

I've just started my first book of the new year and it is Kingdom of The Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco.
I'm 6 chapters in and loving it! Putting it down for family dinner made me grumpy! lol

I've also set my GoodReads goal for 2023 at 52 books!
One book a week... I'm still taking it slow with the reading. I'm trying to get back to pre-illness levels so manageable targets are the name of the game!

I wasn't signing up for any other challenges but I'm going to jump into COYER for its 10-year celebration! It's low-pressure and more about the community so should be good for me.

  1. Oh gosh I don't even bother with figuring out all the other stuff. I do the blog and it seems that people keep coming despite me not utilizing social media hardly any. I know it's basically just older book bloggers from before when it was simpler but I'm fine with that. Not putting pressure on it since at the end of the day, I'm not making any money or anything. Just connecting with other book lovers.

Glad to have you joining us for COYER - you're so right, it's low pressure and you can easily just come be part of our awesome community!

  2. I feel the pressure for Instagram and Twitter as well. I try to make images but I don't have time. I am NOT a camera person either, I also don't like how I look and sound on video, nor do I have time to watch a lot of other people's videos/reels, I prefer the pictures. Happy New Year!!

  3. I feel you. One post a day linked to a review is what I do on IG. I have a TikTok but have only done 2 videos. (graphics, no me) COYER is fun, glad you are joining!

  4. I don't do Tik Tok at all. I do have Instagram, but I don't really do anything with it. Good luck with your challenges. Happy New Year!

  5. I totally get what you mean around the socials. I used to love Insta but I liked images and I'm just awful at reels and like you don't feel comfortable in front of the camera. I have never done TikTok - don't have an account or a clue!

  6. I kind of just blog. I hardly do any socials. I keep wishing Goodreads had a better reply system because that is still my favorite place (with blogs) to talk about books. Here's hoping you are able to escape from Alcatraz (I love escape rooms!) and happy new year!

  7. Happy New Year! :D I totally get what you mean about Instagram and TikTok. I do have an Instagram account, but it's nothing fancy. I usually just show pictures of which books I'm reading (if I remember to do it, lol). Have fun doing the Alcatraz escape room!

  10. I tried Instagram for day and gave up. And Tik Tok, no. I'm a lot like you. I enjoy blogging and find this is the best format for me. Sometimes I even struggle with keeping up with that though. So, you are definitely not alone! The Alcatraz Escape Room theme sounds fun! I hope you enjoyed doing it. Also, I hope you have a wonderful New Year, Nicci. Enjoy your reading!

  11. Blogging has changed so much and I enjoy IG but I'm never going to have an *aesthetic* do reels or tik tok so I think my time as book blogger (like I was) is over.

I really do want to blog more. I miss the interaction when I'm away too long but I struggle with what to blog about and actually sitting and typing lol

    Happy New Year!
