Review: Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass #3)

*Some minor spoilers ahead*

Celaena has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak―but at an unspeakable cost. Now, she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth . . . a truth about her heritage that could change her life―and her future―forever. Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. Will Celaena find the strength to not only fight her inner demons, but to take on the evil that is about to be unleashed?

Paperback

Full Length Novel - over 500 pages

Third Person

Yes - You'll need to have read the first two book in the series to follow this book.

Yes.
There are always going to be unresolved plots when a book is part of a series but there is stuff that happens towards some characters at the end of this book that will leave you twitching for the next one in the series IMMEDIATELY so I'd have book four - Queen of Shadows - to hand if I were you or you may lose your mind.

No, this is book two in a series and I don't think we'll get anything resembling a HEA until the final book! Plus, I have no idea what a HEA will even look like in this world.

Yes but it isn't gratuitous nor overly graphic but the book definitely isn't for the squeamish or for delicate flowers.

What I Liked:
I liked meeting new characters - namely Aedion, Rowan and Manon (and her dragon) - and seeing another side to Celaena. I liked seeing her broken and then seeing her heal; You learn a lot about her past in this book and it's heartbreaking. I loved her relationship with Rowan and I LOVED the potential plot twists and consequences for future books that will result from this one.

What I Didn't Like:
It took longer than I would have liked for Calaena to pull herself together but it wouldn't have been the book it was if she didn't go on that journey.

Other Thoughts:
Have book four sitting beside you for when you finish this one. You are going to have a serious book hangover and want to get stuck straight back into this fantastic world and find out what happens to characters you really come to adore!

I've also decided my heart is a fickle witch for it fell out of love with Celaena's love and head-over-heels for a fae prince! 😆

“It would not take a monster to destroy a monster - but light, light to drive out darkness.”

💬

“He would not apologize for today, or yesterday, or for any of it. And she would not ask him to, not now that she understood that in the weeks she had been looking at him it had been like gazing at a reflection. No wonder she had loathed him.”

💬

“She was not becoming anything different from what she always was and always had the capacity to be. You just finally saw everything. And once you saw that other part of her… You cannot pick and choose what parts of her to love. Just as you cannot pick which parts of me you accept.”

💬

“He looked at his friend, perhaps for the last time, and said what he had always known, from the moment they’d met, when he’d understood that the prince was his brother in soul. “I love you.”

💬

“They had survived, when so many had not. And no one else could understand what it was like to bear it, unless they had lost as much.”

    1. I'm really enjoying them, and the author's writing style. Definitely not your typical YA type novels.

  2. This is the book I stopped on. I did like the story but I don't know about Celaena anymore. She got kind of redundant? Or just not as interesting. In the first book she was awesome. I think it was the romance actually that dampened everything but I'm glad you enjoyed it (:

    1. I'm really enjoying Queen of Shadows (the next book). Celaena has found herself again and is a nice mix of the Celaena she was and the Celaena I think she's going to become.
I'm reading it a lot more slowly than the others though as my friend said book 5 ends on a MAJOR cliffhanger and I wont deal with that well when the final book isn't out until May next year! lol
My theory is if I read 4 and 5 nice and slowly it wont be as long to wait until I get the final instalment! (Which is confusingly book 7... Book 6 comes out in September but is Chaol's book so is linked but doesn't feature Celaena as far as I'm aware!)

    1. OMG I'd definitely wait! A friend of mine said that book 5 ends on a MASSIVE cliffhanger (although she wouldn't tell me what!) and considering how twitchy I am waiting for the next book in a series when nothing major happens I'm going to die waiting until next May for the final book of this series! lol
