Review: Magic Gifts by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #5.5)

Dinner date after a hard workday should be heavenly. Of course, dates between the Beast Lord and Kate Daniels don’t always go as planned. Undead run amok, heads are chopped off, lawyers are deployed with extreme prejudice, and drunk vikings call people out.

Paperback.
(Novella was in the back of my Gunmetal Magic paperback.)

Novella.

First Person.

Yes.
I believe you really need to read this series in order and have read the main books to follow / enjoy.

Yes.
(It's a Kate Daniels book. Of course there is violence.)

What I Liked:
I liked the laid back nature of this book. The simplicity of Kate and Curran going on a date. Sure, this is Kate and Curran so no date is simple but I loved how they roll with the weird stuff and love each other fiercely through the chaos and I absolutely loved the neo-vikings... They were hilarious.

What I Didn't Like:
Nothing. This was a fun filled quick read.

Other Thoughts:
This novella is after book 5 in the series, Magic Slays, and takes place at the same time as Andrea's book, Gunmetal Magic. It was pretty cool watching the stories intersect.

I also enjoyed the developments with the guild following on from the events in Book four, Magic Bleeds, therefore I wouldn't recommend reading this out of sync with the main series.

“And how did your day go?" I asked Ascanio.
He turned to me, a dreamy look on his pretty face. "We killed things. There was blood. Fountains of blood. And then we had barbecue.”

“Mmmm, Kate, the Chief of Security. Sexy. Who better to guard my body then the woman who owns it?"
"Curran, I will punch you.”
“Rough play.” Curran pretended to shiver in excitement”

  1. Novellas are nice when you don't have time to read a larger book.

  2. Love that quote, "Who better to guard my body than the woman who owns it."

    1. Me too! There's something so... Deliciously primitive about it but I love it. Curran is the alpha of the alphas yet he happily lays out 'ownership' of himself to Kate. It's yummy! ๐Ÿ˜‰
