Review: Cursed By Fire by Danielle Annett

Blood is going to spill...

I just hope it won’t be mine.

After two weeks of searching, I found the seven-year-old I'd been hired to find too late. His body broken and discarded. Dead.

My boss doesn't want me to hunt down his killers. It's too dangerous.

But the Pacific Northwest Pack steps in, hiring me to bring the bastards to justice.

Turns out the kid was half shifter. And shifters don't abandon their own.

In a search that takes me through the maze of shifter hierarchy and the depths of the paranormal underworld, these killers underestimate how determined I am to mete out their punishment. Vigilante justice is the only kind these people understand.

Yes, blood will spill. And I'm determined it will be theirs.

N/A, but I can see one brewing!

Yes.

I’m not going to lie, I had issues with how similar some elements were to other UF series, such as the Kate Daniels series. Things like the main character is a mercenary who ends up entwined with the shifters, the pack structure of the shifters, the Lyc-V infection that causes one to become a shifter… And if I’m not very much mistaken, Aria is going to end up with mr alpha of alphas aka Curren Declan.
This was a distraction - and it felt wrong - which was a shame as there was plenty of room for originality by focusing on the psykers and just having the shifters and vampires as a by-the-by.

Despite this, I actually enjoyed the book. Aria is stubborn, headstrong and doesn’t know when to quit. The overarching premise of the story - humans trying to eradicate non-humans - by using the ‘enhanced’ human psykers is interesting and the steady pace of the action kept me turning the pages curious as to what comes next.

With luck, the follow-on books in the series will allow the series to shine on its own, and differentiate itself more from the others, thus allowing me to read it without feeling slightly guilty for enjoying it!

I’m also hoping the pesky potential three-way love triangle (love quadrangle?) is resolved speedily for that was a little annoying… Or she should make it go all reverse harem and make things really interesting!

I’d say give this book a read if you like UF and want something familiar, but different, that can be read quite speedily.

I don't love it, I don't hate it... It's fine with pretty colours.

    1. It was a promising start but wait until you hear about book 2... It all went slightly wrong. That said, I'll probably still read book 3 if it releases on KU, lol.
