Review: Kissed By Fire by Danielle Annett

As Friend of the Pack, Aria Naveed should be untouchable, protected by the most influential group in the Pacific Northwest. But someone is unleashing rogue vampires to hunt her down, and she is determined to find out why.

When Aria gains command of Sanborn Place and takes on a case involving a mysterious paranormal, her life is put in more peril than ever as she finds herself bound to an influential power player. She doesn't want to be anyone's puppet, but must tread carefully as she traverses the streets of Spokane, WA, or risk being overwhelmed by the forces moving against her.

As the only known pyrokinetic in the area, Aria is in high demand, but not for her services. It seems that to those in power, she's worth more dead than alive, and if a mysterious enemy has their way, she won't live long enough to find out why.

Still brewing but got a lot more interesting!

Yes.

Warning! I'm about to get ranty!
OMG.
What the hell.
This book… This book was a bit of a hot mess and that freakin' sucks because it could have been so good!

What was my issue you may wonder?
Well, I’ll tell you...

Editing.
Or, more accurately, the complete lack of it despite what you may read on the author’s twitter or blog.
It was awful.
A typo on every other page.
Misspelled words, incorrect word usage… It was a distracting cluster fuck and really not easy to ignore.
Things are especially bad when you have to read a sentence multiple times to work out what it meant, for at first glance it's just a jumble of words that form a barely coherent sentence.

How the hell a proof-reader or editor could miss even a few of the errors, let alone all of them, is beyond me.
I’d happily go back through the manuscript and highlight every single one just so other poor readers don’t have to suffer through this version of the manuscript like I did… It’s supposed to be a finished product!
*bangs head on table*

Then there are the multiple potential relationships…
The potential love quadrangle from the previous book got messier and more annoying despite there now being only one way for things to go.

Copy copy samey samey!
OMG, I mentioned in my review for book one that I really hoped the series would differentiate itself from the other series it seems naughtily similar to and it didn’t.
In fact, I think it developed even more similarities for example, you can substitute evil father who thinks he does good things for evil mother who thinks she does good things.

Length
It was stupidly short.
This could either be a short novel or a long novella - I’m not sure which - but either way it was ridiculous considering how rushed and incomplete the book felt.
A few thousand words more to elaborate rather than bouncing around like a pinball would have made all the difference.

Did I like anything?
Actually, yes.
I kinda liked the characters: Aria, Declan, James, Inarus.
They could each do with being fleshed out a little more but I like them. I like the overarching plot - humans wanting to eradicate all non-humans by inciting a war - and I like all the possibilities it presents.
It’s just frustrating and disappointing about how it’s being executed! The lack of originality, and the lack of due care in finishing off the product!
Argh!!!

That said, I am a first class idiot for I’ll probably read the next book in the series as I’m curious, a glutton for punishment and I get easily attached to fictional characters and things...

I like the colours and I like how the female on the cover matches the description of the protagonist.

  1. It's so frustrating to find a book you want to like but the grammar and spelling mistakes are awful.

  2. I hate when the editing issues are SO bad that it disrupts your reading. I can ignore a few minor things but when you have to re-read just to figure things out. Nope.

    1. I'm quite tolerant of the odd blip but this was unreal...

  3. Ouch, yeah if you cannot figure out what the sentence meant that is hard.I enjoyed book one but haven't continued due to massive TBR pile.

    1. I'm so disappointed because I also enjoyed book one. I could have really enjoyed this one too but everything combined was just too much. :(

  4. Oh noooooo, this sounds like a complete mess, Nicci! Poor editing is no fun AT ALL, especially if you have to put in the effort to figure out what a sentence says... and it sounds like it just gets worse as you continue on in the book. :(

Despite that, though, I do hope the third will be much better than this one, or even better, as good as the first one.

  5. Oh I don't think I'll start this one as I do think the editing issues will bug me... and if I start it I'm afraid I'd be like you and it would also be a glutton for punishment! LOL

    1. Oddly, the first one was ok. I don't know if this was just rushed or whatever. :/

  6. I'm sorry this one didn't work for you! I probably wouldn't have picked it up based on content (still not reading a lot of vampire books these days), but the typos would drive me bananas. A few mistakes in a book is one thing, but every page... no thank you.

    1. The supernatural books are right up my street at the moment. Can't get enough! I went off them for a few years - and switched completely to contemporary books - but its so nice to be back in fantasy worlds. :)

    1. Book one was so promising... Book 3 has just released so I'll wait to see if it comes out on KU (and read it as part of my subscription) rather than pay separately for it.

  8. I hate editing issues. I can get over a few mistakes here and there, even traditional publishing has a few issues...but when it's all over I want to scream. I'll have to keep that in mind if I come across book one.

    1. With any luck she'll get it fixed up and re-loaded so others don't have to suffer through it! Ruins a good story. :(
