Review: Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill

They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but I was doing fine until Chicago’s vampires announced their existence to the world. When a rogue vampire attacked me, I was lucky he only got a sip. Another bloodsucker scared him off and decided the best way to save my life was to make me the walking undead.

Now I’ve traded sweating over my thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan “Lord o’ the Manor” Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed,
four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects my gratitude—and servitude. Right…

But someone’s out to get me. Is it the rogue vampire who bit me? A vamp from a rival House? An angry mob bearing torches?

My initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war—and there will be blood.

Nope, this is book one!

No, the story arc for this book is complete but there are threads left hanging for the series arc.

Not yet applicable... But there are the makings of one!

Yes but it's mild.

I’d been jonesing for a nice new UF to sink into for a while and this one had been lurking on the kindle neglected. When I found out the series was complete, it was a no brainer to dive in.

I’m not sure what I expected but what I got was kinda awesome.

A kick ass heroine (Merit), a sexy-ass pseudo-love interest and a fun and cute rival. Or should that be the other way around? For although I see romance on the horizon between Ethan - Merit’s Master vampire - and Merit, they aren’t involved whereas Morgan - a vamp from a rival house - seems like a real-time prospect in book 2… But I digress.

This series isn’t a romance, It’s UF and I must not let my little shipper heart run away from me.

As book one in the series, Some Girls Bite introduces the reader to a rich and well developed world where vampires have come out of the closet and are a newly (sort of) accepted portion of society whereas the rest of the supernatural world is still under the radar.

Merit is a scholar - a English Lit grad student - and she finds herself brutally thrust into the supernatural world with little knowledge of how to navigate it. She’s a strong character who is pretty likable and she is supported by a cast of characters who each have their own well developed personalities and issues.

It was a fun read watching Merit become part of the world, and the political drama and intrigue that surrounds the vamps seized my attention and made the book unputdownable.

This, combined with how much I like Merit, makes me very excited to read more of this series!

I hate the cover.
I don't know why except it's dark, miserable and blah.
In fact, I hate all the alternate versions of the cover too...
Probably one of the reasons it took me so long to start the series despite having it sitting on my kindle.

  1. It's been forever since I've read one of her books but I loved the ones I have read. Thanks for the great review and reminder to read more of her books.

  2. Oh man, I read these books so long ago and then sort of lost steam with them. I really need to go back and read them. And I agree, the covers could be so much better.

    1. I'm pacing myself. I've read the first three. Now I'm reading a few different books and then I'm going to read the next three. I was so tempted just to keep going but I knew I'd run out of steam if I tried to power through all thirteen back to back.

  3. I read this book years ago as part of a read along in my first year of blogging. I haven’t ever found the time to continue the series even though I want to.....

    1. I've enjoyed the first three!
I totally understand about finding the time to continue. I'm like that with so many series these days... The desire is there but the time and lure over other books isn't.

  4. Aaaah my all time favourite series (aside from the infernal devices) I may have had a mini freak out seeing the first book reviewed here!

And I'm just gonna say, I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the series! I've been meaning to reread the series for a while to prepare for the spin off (don't read the spin off info on goodreads it will totally spoil this series for you trust me :/ stupid goodreads) but I honestly loved this series with all my heart the characters and aaaah...this is making me want to reread the series so bad right now. Great review - I can't wait to read your reviews for the other books (if you do review them).

And the covers I actually like them, but I do love my paranormal books which are known for dark covers :)

    1. Oh, I loved the Infernal Devices!
I've read the first three of Chicagoland Vamps now and I've really liked them all (especially book 3). I'm pausing to read some other books then I'll dive back into it and read the next three.
I was tempted to blitz the entire series one after an other but they'd blur together if I did that and theres the risk I'd run out of steam before reaching thirteen!

  5. I've done a couple of these on audio and I do think I need to continue. I also really liked Merit and hated these covers. At least the story is good! :)

    1. Indeed Melissa! It's one of those 'don't judge a book by it's cover reads' but I so often do, lol.

  6. I've always thought this series looked fun, and as someone who wants to read more urban fantasy I should probably give these a try.

  7. The first in her new series starts comes out in August! I actually have that one already on my schedule. It's also set in the Chicagoland Vampire world! I'll jump in there - Chloe Neill has been on my TBR forever.

    Beautifully reviewed!

  8. Like you, I’m not a fan of the cover (it’s pretty lame and cheesy) but it sounds like what’s inside more than makes up for it! I gotta say, the very last thing I need is another series - I have soooo many open series that I want to read/complete - but I sure do like the sound of this one! After falling head over heels in love with The Others series by Anne Bishop I would like to get into another UF.

    1. I've really enjoyed the first three books of this series. I think the beauty of it is that it's a complete series so I know I can read it all and it won't be abandoned in the year I'd usually have to wait on the next one.
I haven't read The Other's series but I'll take a look! I have a series UF / PNR bug at the moment. :)

    1. It is a long one - 13 books - but I like that it's complete and I can binge it without having to wait a year on the next instalment. :)

    1. Ooh, that sounds ominous! I've read the first three and I'm taking a brief break and reading other books before reading the next three so whatever happens I'll read 4-6 back to back. With any luck that'll keep me sane through whatever nail-biter awaits?

  11. I read this one a while ago, can't remember much of the details, but I think it was a decent read. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one and it's nice to know a series is already complete when you start it.

    1. I love a complete series. I'm not a patient person and waiting a year on the next book almost kills me!
With a lot of series, I won't start reading (even if I buy the books as they release) until the final book in the series is getting close to release because I don't want to deal with the waiting or the cliffhangers.
