Book Blogger Hop: How many books did you read last year + 2019 Ambition

How many books did you read last year? Will your goal be to match that number or surpass it?

Last year, I read 91 books. This was 13 short of my target of 104.
I chose 104 for last year's target as I figured two books a week was pretty manageable but, as it turns out, life got pretty busy last year and sometimes I failed to achieve this, other times I more than doubled it and some weeks I read nothing at all.

This prompt made me look back at my Goodreads challenges for the past 5 years (that's how long I've joined in with them) and I've only succeeded in reaching my target twice.

In 2014, I set a target of 125 books and read 126.
In 2015, I set a target of 100 but read 85.
In 2016, I set a target of 65 and read 53.
In 2017, my target was 36 and I read 62.

Interestingly, 2014 was the year I started my current job and I read significantly fewer books that year than I did when I had my previous job. Year on year since then, my total has fallen (with the exception of last year). I totally blame the job... That and the little dude starting school which is freaking time-consuming!

Anyway, considering my target was successively lowered year after year until I put it back up for 2018, I'm rather proud of reading my 91 books and that's why this year I'm going to aim for 104 again.
I think that I'm finally starting to get my reading groove back but we'll see!

    1. As long as you enjoy what you read, I wouldn't worry about the number. Books are my number one passion so they get a lot of time from me. :)

  3. It's so interesting to see how your goals and achievements have sifted over the years! I should go back and look at my own in a similar way.

    1. It's one of the reasons I love Goodreads as a tracker. Especially now you can count re-reads!

  4. For the second year in a row I’ve set my GR goal at 50 books. It’s totally do-able, I can up it if I feel like it later, and it takes all the pressure off me. :) I used to set my goal around 100 but sometimes that was tricky and I’d find myself actually stressing over meeting that totally arbitrary number. And then I realized that was crazy. LOL

Good luck with 50. You're going to smash that. 🙂

  7. Changes in work and life can definitely impact your reading. I'm just getting to the point where I feel like my reading can start increasing again. I was a little over ambitious last year but I have hopes I'll do better this year. I won't be too broken up if it doesn't happen but it's fun to try.

    1. I love the challenge but, as you say, I'm not upset if I don't achieve them.

  8. You worked full-time, did a full-time mommy job, got married, bought a new home, and read 91 books. That's pretty awesome.

  10. The number of books you have read over the past years is very impressive. GREAT job!!

Thanks for sharing each year of your reading. I like seeing lists like that. :)

Best of luck this year with your reading.

  11. I was disappointed at my 157 total as I had to read a lot of short books to get that amount down. Three big reading slumps through the year put paid to my chances! This year I'm going for 200 at the moment.

    1. Good luck! 200 would be really something! And I wouldn't worry about the short books boosting your number. Lets face it, a novella + a 600+ page novel average each other other on 'normal' book length.

  12. Good luck on your reading goal! I have a blogger friend that counts pages read instead of books because some books are short or very long. There are times I will read 100 pages of a book and not finish but I don't count it as a book read so I kind of like the page count idea. Have a great week.

  13. I read 157 last year but I'm having a slooooow start to 2019 and just found out we're about to move across country so I have no idea what this year will look like. I set my Goodreads goal to 100 but that's looking super ambitious right now lol

  14. I wish I could read half of what you read last year! It's not life in my case but my eyes but more over the books that I choose, sometimes I get swept away by the story and I finish a book in 2 days, sometime it takes me weeks to finish one...

  15. This prompt had me looking back too and I only completed my challenge once, 2012 which was my second year, but I cannot find the numbers for 2011 so I didn't include that in my recap.
