Mini Reviews: Brave The Tempest & Sweep of The Blade!

Sometimes you read a book and don't really have a lot to say when finished... That's where a mini review comes in handy!

🌻

Cassie Palmer has been chief seer of the supernatural world for a little over four months. In that time, she's battled two gods, fallen in love with two men, and confronted the two sides of her own nature, both god and human. So it's not surprising that she currently finds herself facing two adversaries, although they have a single purpose: to wipe out the supernatural community's newest fighting force, leaving it vulnerable to enemies in this world and beyond.

To prevent catastrophe, the vamps, mages, and demons will have to do the one thing they've never managed before and come together as allies. Cassie has the difficult task of keeping the uneasy coalition intact, and of persuading her own two opposing forces, a powerful mage with a secret and a master vampire with a growing obsession, to fight at her side. She just hopes they can do it without tearing each other apart.

Ok, first up, this is a series that has to be read from the beginning, you can't just jump in whenever because the world is too convoluted and there's a certain level of assumption that you know what they're talking about: Chance doesn't waste a lot of time recapping.
Secondly, even though we're on book 9 in the series, only 3 or 4 months have passed in the book's timeline, which feels a bit weird when the series has been rolling for over a decade.

However, if you've read the series up to now but haven't yet picked up Brave The Tempest, then do it!! OMG do it! I loved this Cassie adventure!
It sets the scene for the final act of this series and it's going to be epic! The magical community is gearing up for war but are being sabotaged. Cassie is pushing herself to the limit trying to juggle the responsibilities of Pythia, Pritkin is finally free of the constraints placed on him by the demon high council and Mircea is as ruthless and annoying as ever... But the triangle between him, Cassie and our favourite war mage is finally resolved! (And my guy won! Yeay!)

It's the usual mix of over the top, non-stop action, time-travelling high jinks, whacky banter and laugh out loud moments but it also has a few quieter moments that are sweet and intimate and remind you of all that Cassie is fighting for.

I'm so excited for what is to come! The ending of the book makes it clear what's on the agenda and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!

Maud Demille was a daughter of Innkeepers. She knew that a simple life wasn't in the cards, but she never anticipated what Fate would throw at her.

Once a wife to a powerful vampire knight, Maud and her daughter, Helen, had been exiled for the sins of her husband to the desolate planet of Karhari. Karhari killed her husband, and Maud had spent a year and a half avenging his debts. But now all the debts are paid. Rescued by her sister Dina, Maud had swore off all things vampire. Except she met Arland, the Marshal of House Krahr. One thing led to another and he asked for her hand in marriage. She declined.

Try as she might, she can't just walk away from Arland. It doesn't help that being human is a lot harder for Maud than being a vampire.

To sort it all out, she accepts his invitation to visit his home planet. House Krahr is a powerful vampire House, and Maud knows that a woman who turned down the proposal from its most beloved son wouldn't get a warm reception. But Maud Demille never shied from a fight and House Krahr may soon discover that there is more to this human woman than they ever thought possible.

Space vampires. Space pirates. Battles, politics, romance.
Sweep of the Blade is a lot of fun... An amazingly fun read featuring characters I love.

The world is whacked. It’s nuts. It’s crazy fun but it’s crazy. However, it’s easy to read and love this book because it’s been built up over the last three in the series.
The Inn Keeper novels are typically from Dina’s pov but this one is from Maud's: Dina and Gertrude Hunt crew don't feature.

Sweep of The Blade was funny and action packed with an intelligent plot line that left you wanting more. It was supposed to be a novella giving Maud and Arland a HEA but what it became was a full length novel that opened up a whole new element to this series that left me wanting MORE especially from Maud/House Krahr's pov.
The world has so much potential and I'm curious as to what comes next... At the very least, I'd love to see Maud and Arland’s wedding with Sean and Dina in attendance for that is guaranteed to be a riot.

Basically, don't start this book unless you've read the earlier books in the series but if you're a fan of the series I fail to see how you would not enjoy this.

  1. I didn't realize the Inkeeper series was still going. I only read book #1. I'm so far behind on their books.

    1. Yep! And they're a lot of fun! There hasn't been anything new this year though. Sweep of The Blade was last years serial that was just tidied up and released as a finished article this year. IA said on their website they've been too busy with contracted works this year to release a new serial... I can't be sad about that, lol. I'll read anything they give me. :)

  2. Woah! 9 books and only 3 or 4 months have passed?! That is totally crazy for sure!! It sounds though like you highly recommend them. And time travel is always a genre that I enjoy checking out.

    1. Yeah, it's whacked really. I'm guessing by the time the series ends that it'll only have been 6 months or so from the beginning but in real time 15 years or so, lol.

  3. I can't wait to read Maud and Arland's story! I have a copy but I was holding out for the audio version. Glad to hear you loved it, Nicci! :)

  4. The fact that the NINTH book in a series is that good and that impressive... wow! I love when an author can keep each book just as fresh and engaging as the first. And when you know the end is coming - and have a feeling that it's going to go out in epic style... love it! :)

    1. They're crazy books... Seriously crazy. The action doesn't stop and can give you whip lash. They're not binge-able but there are huge gaps (usually) between releases so it's fun when a new one comes out!

Now she's finishing the series as an indie, I'll be curious about how quickly they release! Book 10 is scheduled tentatively for December this year!

  5. That is a lot of story to pack into a few months of timeline!

    1. It's insane. So much time has passed for you as a reader that it's hard to remember sometimes that little time has actually passed within the book's world!
